PODCASTING: WHAT DOES IT TAKE?
Find out on Tuesday, February 26, at 7 pm EST when you have an opportunity to meet with Bill Lovin, known as “North Carolina Schools’ Videographer”
since he’s filmed documentaries in classrooms and schools for over twenty years and the founder of EstuaryLIVE, a live, interactive webcast field trip
to coasts around the country. Bill is also the builder of the Bookhenge on NC State’s Wolflands Island in Second Life. We will use the conferencing
capabilities there to meet. Search for “NC State Wolflands” to find the island and head to the Bookhenge. You can’t miss it.

A Tony Vincent blog post titled “Advice for Better Podcasts“  discusses Matt Villano wrote Building a Better Podcast in January 2008’s T.H.E. Journal.
“One podcast is neat and fun, a unique diversion,” Sprankle says. “Do a bunch of podcasts and it becomes something the students look forward to.”

My apologies and Thank you to Peggy George. Episode 100 was not my first visit to http://www.poducateme.com.  I first saw it on Episode 70. .  Still a good site even if my mind is slipping!

My tech savvy Superintendent had done his first podcast.  However, we don’t have it on the air quite yet..
Met for the third time with a PUSD principal who is determined to podcast to his staff.  I also added a little bit of competition…
Todd Watson of Foothills Elementary has been podcasting again even promoting the concept to other through email. Check him out at http://applepodcast.peoriaud.k12.az.us/weblog/twatson/
A student form Linda Coopers class contacted me asking where to find audacity.  She was so excited after learning to podcast, she wanted to continue from home!  I did ask her to share a link when she had something cool uploaded.

I also have my first paid gig this next week.  Which is the reason for the podcast titled “So you want to be a Podcaster”  I will be recording it after this show and I hope to have it in three formats.  If you see it listed three times, I got it all done. If not, I ran out of time.

So you want to be a podcaster
A few things to think about
By
Shawn Wheeler
www.shawnwheeler.name

What type(s) of podcast shows will you be creating
• Format
• Audio recording of your classroom lessons
• Study guides
• Tutorials
• Parent communication
• Homework help focusing on parents working with their child

Frequency
How often will you be doing your podcast(s)

Student Created Content
Individual student podcast
• Oral Report
• Reading a poem, essay, or story

Student Created Content
Group Assignment
• Old time radio show format
• Student created play
• Recreating a historical event through audio
• Interviewing adults, other students etc…
• Classroom News, a podcast for adult consumption

Naming and describing your show
• Make it memorable and meaningful
• The name is the attention getter (bait) Your description is your sales pitch
• The description should tell the potential listener why they should listen or subscribe to your show

Presentation
• Wing it (Not recommended)
• Scripted reading
• Bulleted topics list
• Filler words and editing (and, um, like, coughing and sneezing)

Voice
• Relax
• Talk to your audience like they are sitting in front of you.
• If you use humor live, use it in your show
• Be memorable

Standard Introduction and Exit Content
• What should you tell your audience at the beginning and end of each show
o The Name of the show
o Your name
o Date and Episode number
o What is it you plan to tell them about? (Topic covered)
o Credit where due
o How to contact you
o Music? It is garnish but it makes a big difference!

• Podsafe Music
o www.podsafeaudio.com
o music.podshow.com
o freeplaymusic.com (Thanks Kim)
o www.magnatunes.com
• Royalty Free
• Topic Transition
• Background music
• Sound effects

Show Notes
• Show notes are written notes which describe the individual show.
• In addition, the show notes should include links to any resources discussed during the show.
Show Notes
• If you script the entire show you may want to include it in the show notes for those individuals who wish to read along.
Show Notes
• Remember your listener could be walking, running, riding and yes, even driving while listening to your show.
• Show notes allow them to quickly locate the resource from your show.

Archiving
• How long should a show remain online?
• Should you save copies of your shows?

Equipment
• Microphones
• Mixers
• Software
• Recorders
• Players

Good the Bad and the Ugly
• What does a good podcast sound like?
• What does a BAD podcast sound like?
• There are some great podcasts out there while others should have their microphone taken away! Listen to several other shows, if you hear a format you like, try it on your show.

Adventures in Podcasting Episode 98

Reader/Listener Question
Hello Mr. Wheeler,
I have been enjoying your Podcasting presentation
and was wondering how you created your web-based presentation. You seem to have audio built into the show online. What program did you use?
Thanks so much.
Brad
Furr HS
Houston ISD
Texas

Thanks for the question Brad.  Here is the code I used. <EMBED src=”../Audio/MemoryRetention.mp3″ autostart=true hidden=False>
Let me break this down.  Between the carrots “<” is the code we need.

EMBED is the code to tell the browser we want to embed a audio or video file.
src= is the code need to tell the browser where to look for the file.  In the example above, the file is located on my web site. However, that file could easily be located on the web somewhere else.
autostart= tells the browser to start the file or not when the page loads.  This can be set to True or False.  True will start the audio to play.  False will force the the person looking at the page to start the audio.
hidden= tells the browser to show the audio controls or not.  True will hide the controls, False will show them.  I know it sounds backwards but I didn’t come up with this stuff.

Other items worth mentioning… (12:45)
This one came in from the Adventures in Podcasting research department AKA Peggy George who told me she found this on Twitter.

Mr. Coley’s web site @ http://Mrcoley.com and “Studycast” @ http://www2.murrieta.k12.ca.us/tovashal/bcoley/studycast/index.htm StudyCast is a podcast created to help the students of Room 34 review for their Social Studies and Science tests. Basically, StudyCast is an audio review session recorded by Mr. Coley for his students. These broadcasts are not intended to replace traditional studying, but rather to provide an additional study aid. You can listen to broadcasts on mrcoley.com or download them to your computer. If you’re looking for a way to study on the go, download a broadcast, then burn it to a CD or transfer it to your iPod.
