I do have to say THANK you for the shout out for our podcast, KPE (Korero Point England). We are glad that you could understand our kids’ accents too

You may be interested to know that we have done a yearlong research on podcasting with KPE here and our findings were more curriculum focused and less technology focused than the research you quoted. Our students’ attitudes progressed from needing the technology to motivate them to enjoying the curriculum content for its own sake as the year went on…

Project iRead is a group of pilot teachers who are exploring using new tools to improve student reading. Teachers are using digital audio tools (iPods, mics, Garageband, iTunes, and various accessories) to improve reading processes. Teachers meet on a monthly basis to exchange ideas and strategies. We have started collecting data about fluency rates – this has been very promising. Initial areas of focus have included:

• Self Reflection – student reads, records his/herself, listens to it and compares it to text being read and will start Miscue Analysis – class assessment: student reads passage; teacher analyzes and records errors on paper
• Universal Access – passage recorded w/ questions
• Echo Reading – skilled reader records passages; student listens to and tries to read passage, imitating reader
• Readers Theatre – students are recorded using GarageBand

Pt England students have become experienced podcasters since we published our first episode back in August 2005. Our flagship podcast, Korero Pt England – or KPE, has a global audience and won our school the ComputerWorld Excellence Award in 2006. We also produce kpeTV as a video podcast.

At a conference in Shanghai a few weeks ago I saw someone using a Web 2.0 Start page as their RSS Reader/Aggregator which I thought was novel.

Now it’s a long time since I’ve looked closely at Web 2.0 start pages … in fact I have a list at http://www.shambles.net/pages/learning/infolit/startpage/

I always was a big fan … and I’m pleasantly surprised how much they have evolved since the early days ….

So much so I devoted a couple of hours to seeing how well one could deal with all of my feeds …. which I’ve been drowning under ….. and the result can be seen at http://www.netvibes.com/shamblesguru

The IMT Training Center recently had the privilege of working with second graders and high school students on a cool technology integration project! Mrs. Dow’s second graders from Paseo Verde created a music video to enter a contest for $25,000 worth of classroom technology. A few students from Ken Keene’s media class at CeHS helped by videotaping and editing the final project. It was quite AWESOME to see these high school kids working so closely with the second graders! What fun!

We wanted to share the final project with you in hopes that you’ll visit the website and add some positive comments about the video. eInstruction will be selecting the finalists by the end of next week, at which time the public will be allowed to vote. Right now it’s important for the judges to see positive comments, good ratings, and lots of hits to the video’s site. (You’ll need to register to do those things, but it doesn’t take long!) We thought you’d enjoy seeing the video, and perhaps you’ll share it with your staff so they can participate, too!

Have you seen the Panwapa website for kids 4-7? It is fantastic and would be a wonderful place for Fredreka to explore. I can’t wait to share it with my grandkids! Lots of audio support for the kids and it’s very web 2.0 and highly interactive. Look at this amazing tool: Miguel Guhlin shared this on his blog and it is a free tool (PC only) that converts all kinds of documents including PhotoStory into mp4 and other formats. I was wondering if something like this might work for posting those PhotoStory albums on your district website so Mac users can view them too? It’s called FormatFactory.  http://formatoz.com

Just discovered these student podcasts today. Maybe you know about them. The teacher is in Alabama and is a computer lab teacher, Mrs.

Coggins. She calls them Buzzcasts and the students produce them once a week. It’s really a cute show. Looks like they follow a standard format that includes news (buzz), weather, menu, buzzword (vocabulary word), poem, joke/riddle.

I listened to the Buzzcast for May 12, 2008.

Love the lunch menu for Friday on this podcast–biscuits and grits.

I learned about it through Twitter. It was posted to show how she uses smilebox.com on her site to share slideshows created by students. Click on the video link. She has over 5000 site visitors from around the world so she’s obviously doing something right. She’s also using wikis with her students. There is a 4th grade wiki on her site for Famous Alabamians where she provides the assignment instructions. I couldn’t see her student mini-webpages they were required to create so they are probably protected. The school year is just getting started for her so I’m sure there will be lots of new content as the year continues.

The Flat Classroom Project – Julie Lindsay and Vicki Davis http://flatclassroomproject.wikispaces.com

The Project uses Web 2.0 tools to make communication and interaction between students and teachers from all participating classrooms easier. The topics studied and discussed are real-world scenarios based on ‘The World is Flat’ by Thomas Friedman.

The Flat Classroom Project 2006 is featured in the latest edition of Friedman’s book in Chapter 13, ‘If it’s not happening it’s because you’re not doing it’, page 501-503.

One of the main goals of the project is to ‘flatten’ or lower the classroom walls so that instead of each class working isolated and alone, 2 or more classes are joined virtually to become one large classroom. This will be done through the Internet through Wikispaces and Ning.

Just listened to this video on YouTube posted by Andrew Middleton. I subscribe to his newsletter and have used some of his resources in the past. He’s very involved with podcasting at the university level in the UK. This link will take you to the blog post where the video is available. He provides some good suggestions for free places to host student podcasts. It is not a great quality video but the suggestions are good. Thought you might like to check it out.

There are a lot of other interesting posts on his blog. He’s working with a group of faculty members to create a collaborative book about podcasting. This is a link to the wiki where they are adding their ideas/content for the book. “Podcasting for Pedagogic Purposes”. The project is fairly new so people are still adding to it. http://podcastingforpp.pbwiki.com/

There are some really interesting podcasts on this page that include interviews and panel discussions about podcasting. http://www.pppsig.podomatic.com/

He has a couple of PPTs posted on the wiki (under June event) that explain this part of the project. The first ppt explains the process he used in the workshop which I think is a great idea! I’ve used his “100 ideas” before when I was working at ASUW. 100 ideas for Podcasting, facilitated by Andrew Middleton (this quickly became 200 ideas!)

100 Ideas for Educational Podcasting – the book!
The aim of this session was to generate 100 ideas for educational podcasts. These ideas will be published in a book by the end of the year targeted at the UK FE and HE community. It is expected that you will come with at least 2 great ideas of how podcasting is already being used and, once we have captured these, we will generate further ideas through creativity activities to reach our target of 100 transferable ideas! Later, a number of these scenarios will be developed further as implemented case studies. Together the scenarios and case studies will demonstrate the versatility and benefits of the medium to educators across the curriculum.

Just have a few clarifications: this website: http://sfxcommunityclub.pbwiki.com  is actually the website of the Community Club in our area. I think you referred to it as the school site in the podcast. I mentioned in our discussion about how easy it was to set up a wiki and how one of the parents on our advisory council had taken the initiative to set this site up for the club. My school site is http://sfxschool.pbwiki.com  and is pronounced Saint Fran – Swa Ex – Aay-V-er. (St. Francois Xavier)

Re: Digiciti Wiki – This was a wiki several other people and I worked on as part of a class I was a student in. Proof positive that wikis are great collaborative tools!

since he’s filmed documentaries in classrooms and schools for over twenty years and the founder of EstuaryLIVE, a live, interactive webcast field trip
to coasts around the country. Bill is also the builder of the Bookhenge on NC State’s Wolflands Island in Second Life. We will use the conferencing

A Tony Vincent blog post titled “Advice for Better Podcasts“  discusses Matt Villano wrote Building a Better Podcast in January 2008′s T.H.E. Journal.

Just finished Episode 93 and thought…”Wow! You have a Mac available on your desk and you still aren’t using Garage Band?!?! So much potential…”

Consider trying it again…take that audio only podcast and add web links, pictures and chaptering that really enhances the content.

Great email after last weeks podcast from Peggy George.
I’m wondering if Brian Carlson uses a Mac? He saved his audio on Garageband. If so, he wouldn’t be able to use Camtasia but you might suggest a piece of freeware for the Mac that is very similar. I heard Vicki Davis talking about it a couple of weeks ago and it looks really good. I have downloaded it but haven’t created anything with it yet.  You can capture your desktop along with your audio, so he could have his PDF open on his desktop while he records his audio (just like Camtasia).  http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/24275/camtwist

Hi Shawn,
This is an awesome use of podcasting that you might want to consider for sharing on one of your weekly podcasts. It is a podcast done by Vicki Davis, Middle School Computer Science teacher in Camilla, GA.
 
She sent it to her students when she was away from school attending a conference. I love it for a lot of reasons. It shows her relationship with her students, it lets them know that she hasn’t forgotten them even though she is at the conference, it describes some of her plans for them for the year with lots of exciting technology tools, it reminds them of the high expectations she has for them and why it’s so important that they become life-long learners, and it shares some of the learning she is experiencing at the conference. It’s an excellent model for teachers to follow. Can you imagine the power of such a message if a teacher shared a podcast like this with their parents when they are attending a workshop or conference? The parents might actually begin to value and support professional development time for teachers!!! She even talks about an interview she did with Tim Tyson at the conference which she does a later podcast on and she lets the students know that they are going to be doing some projects like the ones he talked about at Mabry Middle School.

What software did I use to make my sample video cast?
The first time was Windows Movie Maker and a Canon DV video camera to create the WMV.  The WMV was converted to a Meg4 video using Jodix Free iPod Video Converter http://www.jodix.com/

The second was done on a Macbook Pro using iMovie and the built in camera in the Macbook.

Review the Podcast information, iTunes will read the feed
Select a category
Press the arrow to continue.
iTunes will display a window stating it will be 24-48 hours before your Podcast is available through iTunes.

While I enjoy reading all the valuable information one these web sites, I find I spend a substantial amount of time looking for the news and waiting for pages to load.  On each of the sites I just mentioned I have to click one or two times just to hit the page that contains the information I want to read.  Even with my high speed connection at home, this still takes valuable time.
 
Using RSS and a tool called an RSS Reader or Aggregator, I can subscribe to each of these news sites through the RSS Feed.  Now here is the cool part.  My RSS Reader will look for new information on each of these web sites for me. Then the reader will display the headline and a short synopsis of the article.  If I want to read the entire article, I click on the link in my reader.  If not, I just go to the next story.
 
I know this sound pretty complicated the first time you hear it, but I assure you, it is not.  To get started you need an Aggregator also known as a Feed Reader.  These come in two flavors.  Software that you install on your computer and web based. I will also note that some web browsers, Internet Explorer 7, Firefox and Safari all have built in RSS readers.  Let’s take a moment to talk about web base and software based RSS Readers.
 
Installable Applications
Sharpreader (www.sharpreader.net)
RSS Reader (www.rssreader.com)

While there are a number of commercial RSS readers you can purchase, I personally look for free software when ever possible. I have had good luck with both SharpReader and RSS Reader. 

Web based RSS Readers
Bloglines (www.bloglines.com)
Newgator (www.newsgator.com)
My Yahoo (my.yahoo.com)
Google Reader (www.google.com/reader)
 
There are also a number of great and free web based readers available.  Both the installed and the web bases readers will monitor the websites you subscribe to.  The one major difference is location.  With the installed reader, you have to be sitting at that computer to read updates and the software will even alert me as new stories arrive.  How cool it that!
 
The web base readers have an advantage because you are able to access them anywhere you have an internet connection.  However, the web base readers will not alert you while you work as the installed readers will. 
 
Okay, now that we know we need a feed reader, let’s find out how we find the feeds.  Before we get too far into this, I do need to explain there are several ways an RSS link will be displayed on a web site.
Depending on the web site, an RSS feed may be displayed as text reading RSS, XML or with an image.
 
Many news sites will provide links to the RSS feeds toward the lower section of the page.  If you want to fallow along on your computer, open your web browser to our local news paper www.azcentral.com
 
As you can see here, AzCentral displays text reading RSS.  (If you are following along, go ahead and click that link.
 
The Washington Post displays the RSS text along with the XML image. As does CNN. 
 
It can be difficult to find these links on a page.  However you can use your browser to search for the text RSS on the page. 
I have found this to be a time saver. 
 
Once you find the link for the RSS feeds, you have the option to choose the type of information you wish to subscribe.   
 
Notice the AzCentral site contains feeds from general Arizona news and local feeds to local shopping.  This is where RSS truly begins to shine.  By subscribing to only the feeds you wish to read, you do not have to sift through all the other content on a web site.   Think of it like picking up the printed news paper and grabbing your favorite section first.
 
Okay, let’s recap what we have done so far. We talked about different RSS readers both installed and web based and we have looked at how to find an RSS feed.  Now let’s talk about what an RSS reader does with that feed.
The reader displays the headlines and a synopsis of the article. 
 
Once you find an article you wish to read, just click on the link to read it in the reader or open the article on the browser.
 
At this point you are ready to subscribe.  For simplicity, I am going to assume you have installed one of the readers I mentioned earlier or you have signed up to use one of the web based tools.  Each is slightly different so I will speak about subscribing in general terms. I am also going to assume you have your RSS reader open or a web browser open to your online reader.  If you are using an online tool, I recommend having two web browsers open as it can be a time saver.
 
Step One – Located the RSS Feed index for the site you wish to subscribe.  In my example, I will be using AzCentral. 
Step Two – Place you mouse over the link to the feed.  This will be text reading RSS, XML or be an image.
Step Three – Right Mouse Click on the link and choose Copy Shortcut.
Step Four – Paste the address into your RSS Reader.  This will vary from Reader to Reader.
Step Five – Review the news stories you just subscribed.

What have I learned after 29 episodes an two classes?

Get your naming conventions for you show down before you start or soon after and be consistent.
Get your ID3 tags down and be consistent with those as well.
Practice the process a few times.  (But don’t let that get in the way.  Just do it!)
You may not like the way your voice sounds… So what, that is the way you sound.  Embrace it. <Smile>
Don’t get tunnel vision.  Podcasting and recorded audio has value beyond our imagination.  Think outside the box and be open to the thoughts of others, they may have the idea that works for you too.
